Deep Blue Caldera

Santorini was once the bustling centre of an ancient lost civilization a many ice ages ago. Today the deep blue caldera which has filled up with seawater over the past centuries has now formed a crescent shaped crater land mass that has quickly become a must visit destination island of Santorini. 

The landscape of this quaint, back in time, enchanting island is constantly evolving literally – with the cliff sides still drifting, monthly limerock formations and abundant sea coves changing with the rising and falling of the sea tides.  So it is safe to say that Santorini is a living picture literally.  This living and breathing picturesque island is truly a priceless gem set among the radiant bluest of the blue and white Greek Islands.

Fira and Oia

The whitewashed, cubed houses of its principal towns, Fira and Oia, cling to cliffs like grapevines above an underwater caldera (crater). They overlook the sea, small islands to the west and beaches made up of black, red and white lava pebbles.  Fira has a small marina port mainly for fisherman boats and local marine vessels.  For the island ferries and larger cruise ships there is typically a tendering boat service that brings people to and from the anchored vessel and shore.  You can choose between hiking up the cliff side, riding a donkey or taking a cable car up to the top.

The two picturesque cliff hanging towns of Fira and Oia are both worth a visit on your next trip but Oia offers the classic shots of the blue top cathedrals, churches and white buildings.   Be sure to stay for at least a couple of days on the island to experience the true inspirational event of the vibrant orange and purple sunset as the sun dives into the sea on the westside of the white and blue hanging cliffs of Santorini.
